Why this petition matters

Started by Serena O'Brien

Summary:
I believe it's time to make life a little easier for all Aussies. Right now, many online companies in Australia only accept driver's licenses and passports as IDs, which can be a real hassle and a security risk. I'm asking these companies to broaden their horizons and accept other forms of ID, like Medicare cards, Proof of Age cards, State-issued Photo IDs, and more. It's about time all Aussies had the freedom to use the IDs that suit them best while keeping their personal info safe.

Hey there,

I wanted to share a frustrating experience I recently had when trying to sign up online for a contract with a telecommunications company. They insisted on a driver's license or passport as my ID, which I don't have. As someone with a visual impairment, I don't possess a driver's license, and my passport is not current. After a lot of back and forth, I managed to convince them to accept my birth certificate. But honestly, it shouldn't have been such a struggle.

What's bothering me:

1. Security Risks: Some companies want us to send our photo ID over email. That's risky business! It's a surefire way to put our personal information in jeopardy. We all know there are smarter, safer ways to do this.

2. Leaving Aussies Out in the Cold, Especially Those with Disabilities and Other Reasons for Not Having a Driver's License: Imagine you're in a situation where you can't obtain or use a driver's license or passport for various reasons. It could be due to a disability, a medical condition, or other personal circumstances. You want to access online services, but you can't because you lack the 'requested' ID. It's not your fault, but you're left out in the cold. I believe everyone should be able to access these services without jumping through hoops.

3. Frustrations with Inefficiency and In-Person Visits: Another common hurdle is the inefficiency of the current system. Some companies not only demand specific forms of ID but also require customers to visit their physical stores in person to show the same exact ID that should be acceptable through digital forms. This process is time-consuming and can be a real turn-off for people looking to use online services. It's frustrating to be forced to go through this additional hassle when a more straightforward digital solution should be available.

Acknowledging the Global Issue: I'm aware that this issue doesn't just affect Australians but many others around the world who face similar challenges when accessing online services. By addressing this problem, we can set an example for a more inclusive and efficient online experience worldwide.

So, here's what I'm asking:

1. Open Up to More ID Options: It's time for companies to get with the program and accept a wider range of IDs. Think Medicare cards, Proof of Age cards, State-issued Photo IDs, and any other government-issued IDs that Aussies use daily.

2. Secure Verification Methods: Let's get creative and find more secure ways to verify identities without resorting to insecure email transmissions.

3. Spread the Word: Companies, please educate your customers on the importance of safe ID practices and make it crystal clear which IDs you accept.

With these changes, all Aussies will have a smoother and safer online experience. It's time to make life simpler for everyone Down Under and worldwide.
