🏳️‍🌈 LGBT community of the United States, I, Sirbrian Spease, the author of "The Boy of Hearts," am reaching out to seek your assistance. Within our LGBT community in the United States, some individuals grapple with the challenges of Borderline Personality Disorder and Dissociative Identity Disorder. My goal is to sell one million copies of my autobiographical audiobook, "The Boy of Hearts," in order to emphasize the significance of my journey in advocating for the recognition of a condition that I refer to as "Gay Personality Disorder."

While it is undeniably vital to promote awareness and support for mental health concerns within our LGBT community, it is equally crucial to approach this matter with the utmost respect and sensitivity to the established medical and psychological standards. At present, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), a widely accepted resource among mental health professionals, does not include "Gay Personality Disorder" as a recognized diagnosis.

Rather than striving to establish a new diagnostic category, it may be more productive to advocate for a deeper understanding of, and support for, mental health issues that affect our LGBT community within the existing diagnostic framework. Collaborating with mental health organizations and professionals who specialize in LGBT mental health can facilitate the dissemination of awareness and enhance access to appropriate care.

Furthermore, it is essential to engage in consultation with mental health professionals and experts in the field to ensure that any proposed changes or additions to diagnostic criteria are firmly grounded in evidence-based research. Your support, in the form of purchasing the book, will be genuinely appreciated, and you can find it at:

Together, my 🏳️‍🌈 LGBT community, you can assist me in taking my book, "The Boy of Hearts," to the grand stage of the cinema in the form of "The Boy of Hearts" movie. To achieve this goal, we need to sell one million copies of the book. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for your support.

Reviews

"Heartbreaking and affirming, Sirbrian shares his struggle of growing up navigating homophobia, neglect, and abuse from his parents. A girl in a boy's body, Sirbrian creates a safe place to be authentic with the love, protection, and acceptance of Prince, Devon, Donna, his older brother Chris, and neighborhood friend Teka. Removed to a boy's home, Sirbrian comes to further embrace his femininity while learning to control his rage and PTSD. I couldn't help but be impressed at Sirbrian's strength in the face of ongoing adversity. Using his imagination to cultivate love and self-acceptance, the dialogues deflecting hate and remembrances of horrific abuse made me gasp in shock and cringe with fear for what Sirbrian endured. Artwork and photos complimented the book, painting a fuller picture of this beautiful person telling their truth. The sheer bravery of sharing this story is inspiring, and I hope there will be sequels to share Sirbrian's journey as it continues to unfurl."

"I felt connected to the part of the book about Sirbrian's mom's reaction to her being gay. While I was never physically abused for it, I was emotionally abused. I believe this book could open the minds of those questioning or discovering their sexuality so that they know they are not alone when it comes to abuse and torture for being who they are, and how they may find ways to fight that abuse. It should open the eyes of people who are not familiar with the LGBTQ community to the every day torture these people are forced to endure through no fault of their own, and that LGBTQ people need to be protected as much as any other class of society. I would recommend this book to others with the warning that this book holds a very realistic and ugly view of the persecution members of the LGBTQ community must face every day."

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing on behalf of Sirbrian Spease, an LGBTQ+ activist and author who I have come to know through editing his first novel, The Boy of Hearts. This autobiography details Sirbrian’s childhood experiences confronting and overcoming a range of adversities, from abuse and neglect to outright homophobic violence. The young Sirbrian meets every challenge with a child’s optimism and boundless imagination, but with strength and resilience well beyond his years. I believe that this book would be instructive to teen, young adult, and adult readers alike on the impacts of poverty, racism, homophobia, bigotry, and systems such as foster care and mental health institutionalization at the individual level.

Sirbrian’s voice is eloquent and incisive throughout The Boy of Hearts, as well as his comic and zine publications. The organization I am a part of, A.B.O. Comix, has had the good fortune to publish these through our work with LBGTQ+ people who are incarcerated. Since Sirbrian has returned home from prison, he has made it his mission to spread a message of hope, joy, and positivity to people who have sustained homophobic violence in their lives. Through sharing his story, Sirbrian advocates for others who have had similar experiences and who need reassurance that it is possible to thrive in spite of adversity.

What I find most inspiring about Sirbrian’s work is his unflinching honesty about his own struggles with mental and emotional health. The Boy of Hearts is as much an examination of an emergent personality disorder in a child who has been traumatized and subjected to physical and psychological violence as it is a bold and gripping piece of literature. Sirbrian’s writing holds space without judgment for his alter ego Devon, a fiercely protective part of his personality with whom he steadily builds a relationship throughout the novel. Sirbrian’s powerful reflections on his condition would be of particular interest to anyone navigating social welfare systems and experiencing negative mental health consequences. Incorporating Sirbrian’s authentic voice into a partnership with your foundation has the potential to effect positive change among multiply-marginalized people. I urge you to consider a collaboration.

Sincerely,Oliver MillsExecutive Assistant, A.B.O. Comix Collective
