The island was known as Peparithos and was famous for its wine in ancient times.
It is said that it was originally inhabited by Cretans,whose leader was Stafylos,who was the son of Ariadne.
The current name was given during the Hellenistic period.It is most likely that it was named Skopelos in the 4th century AD.
